6800 american troops lost their lives on Iwo Jima. 6000 marines alone were killed. 21,000 Japanese were killed during the capture of Iwo Jima. The monument for the flag raising stands atop Mt. Suribachi. Gun emplacements remain and at the time of our operation there 10 years later we were still able to find boots, clothing and other remnants lying around that may have been left during the siege. The mountain itself was full of tunnels that the Japanese remained in. The climb to the top of Suribachi was tough even without fighting for every inch as had occurred during the war. I felt honored to be here during the memorial. T. Burnes |
